Wie van heavy metal houdt, kan de laatste jaren bijna niet om Crystal Viper heen. Deze Poolse band onder leiding van Marta Gabriel kwam onlangs met The Silver Key. Die plaat vormde een mooie reden om de frontvrouw van Crystal Viper aan een interview te onderwerpen.

Dat interview met Crystal Viper ging niet alleen over de nieuwe plaat. Daarvoor heeft bijvoorbeeld Polen te veel met metal, waardoor ook dat nog passeert. Het interview

WRR: ‘Now The Silver Key is there, how do you look back on the proces of writing and recording?’
MG: ‘I believe it’s a very strong album, and I’m very proud of what we achieved. When it comes to writing and recording, I had very exact plan, and I was following it, the goal was to make an album that is a bit darker, faster and heavier than the previous one, but which continue the same style, both musically and lyrically. Imagine big horror series, like “Nightmare On Elm Street” or “Friday The 13”, it’s the same formula here. You know what to expect, you know what it’s all about – but there are some new elements, like new characters, or new ideas. In fact, the working title of this new album was “The Cult 2”, we just decided to not officially call the album like that, as people who never had a chance to check “The Cult” could feel weird about it.’

Nieuwe drummer en Bathory

WRR: ‘Drummer Kuba Galwas is new in the line-up. What did he bring to the band?’
MG: ‘Kuba is an excellent drummer, and he has a bit different background than the rest of us – while he obviously loves IRON MAIDEN, he’s into more extreme Metal, and you can hear that in his playing. I would say he brought new energy and new approach to CRYSTAL VIPER.’

WRR: ‘You are honoring Bathory with the great cover of ‘Gods Of Thunder Of Wind And Of Rain’. What means Bathory to you?’
MG: ‘I’m a huge fan of BATHORY, I actually even named my horse Quorthon! In the past we were usually recording cover songs of classic Heavy Metal bands: MANILLA RIOT, EXCITER, SATAN, DEMON, RIOT and so on, but this time we wanted to do something less obvious. This is why we decided to cover one of the BATHORY songs.’

Polen en metal

WRR: ‘Nowadays Poland has many metal bands. What makes Poland so great to make heavy music?’
MG: ‘Poland is the land of Black, Death and Thrash Metal since I can remember – we actually never had many traditional Heavy Metal bands. While there were some cool young bands founded in the last few years, some years ago CRYSTAL VIPER was the only one active classic Heavy Metal band that was recording and playing shows on regular basis. But yes, we have really excellent Death and Black Metal bands here, like VADER, BEHEMOTH, DECAPITATED or MGLA, and as I’m a big fan of those genres, so I can’t complain!’

WRR: ‘Why should people come to visit Poland?’
MG: ‘Poland has a lot to offer: the sea, the mountains, and really amazing history which you can meet, see and touch almost everywhere.’

WRR: ‘Now The Silver Key is released, what are the plans for Crystal Viper?’
MG: ‘We will play at few selected festivals this Summer, including Wacken Open Air, Hellfest, Metal Magic in Denmark and Over The Wall in Greece. Then we will kick off our two weeks long European Tour at Keep It True Festival, and we will play in Germany, Czech Republic, Austria, Denmark, France, Belgium and Italy. It’s going to be a great tour on which we will be joined by Savage Master.’
